A lesson in courage: “One cannot forget, one cannot understand, one cannot justify…”

15.02.2026

On February 13, 2026, on the eve of the memorial days when the entire country pays tribute to internationalist soldiers and defenders of the Fatherland, staff of memorial complex “Khatyn” held a Courage Lesson in schools in Logoisk District, Minsk Region.

The lesson's topic —"We cannot forget, we cannot understand, we cannot justify..."—served as a reminder for schoolchildren in Oktyabr and Kameno agro-towns of the tragic events of World War II, the tragic pages of our history that are important to remember in order to prevent their repetition.

One of the key moments of the lesson was introducing the students to unique historical finds discovered in Uruchye tract in Minsk region during excavations conducted by the Prosecutor General's Office of the Republic of Belarus. Among the exhibits were personal belongings of soldiers and civilians, which held special meaning for their owners.

The students were particularly touched by the story of a pendant, which likely contained a photograph of a loved one. This pendant may have served as a talisman for a Red Army soldier captured in captivity, and became a symbol of hope and strength in the most difficult moments. These objects, with their personal histories, reminded them that the war touched everyone's lives.

During the story, the children were able to feel the pain and suffering experienced by those who witnessed the war years. After all, only by knowing the truth about those events can one truly understand the value of a clear sky above and the importance of preserving the memory of those who gave their lives defending the Fatherland.

The lesson in courage was not only an educational event but also a reminder that historical memory is our duty to the fallen defenders of the Fatherland and our contribution to the future, to preserving peace and preventing a repetition of the tragedies of the past!
